Map My Walk and a 5 Day Streak

October 13, 2014 in Uncategorized

Last week I decided that one of the key reasons I have fallen off the wagon is due to my failure to exercise consistently.   I wrote a whole post about it over the weekend.  I had a major A-HA moment.  Here it is—->  Is Exercise the Secret Weapon?

I realize that exercise is vitally important to keeping me on track.  Not for weight loss really but for my mindset.  It keeps me more sane.  It makes me a little tougher and less of a BIG WIMP which I am lately.   But since I tend to be absolutely horrible at making myself workout, I have to start small.  I mean once I make it a habit I’m usually all in.  But if I’ve been out of the habit it’s tough getting back on track.  This is why starting with 30 seconds of exercise was so brilliant in the beginning.  My brother’s 30 second to Victory program is what saved my life.  It made me realize there was something do-able out there for me.  And doing it every day snowballed into 5 miles within 5 months.

So last week, I got up and walked half a mile.  I started Wednesday so I made it through about 5 days.  It is such a small distance that I will do it even if I don’t want to.  And that is the critical element.  Doing things I do NOT want to do every single day without fail.  Once I grow that mental muscle, I’ll be back on track.

This week I am challenging myself to a 5 day streak (Monday-Friday).   I am going to do that half of a mile every day rain or shine.  Part of my challenge includes doing it as a walk/jog more specifically jogging up a hill to the second mailbox at the top.  This is a short task for me but it’s also challenging.  I’ve been jogging more of it and shaving off my time.  Every day I hope to get mentally stronger.  The fact that I have now gotten out the door every day for over 5 days straight is amazing.  I haven’t done that in over a year.  This week I plan to keep at it.  If anyone wants to join me, please do! I can always use the encouragement of others and I want to encourage you as well.

I’m keeping track of the 5 day streak on my Facebook page here—-300 Pounds Down Facebook Page     Please check it out, like it if you want, and come join us as we keep track every day of our 5 day streak.

I keep track of my walking through Map My Walk.  I think THIS is the link to my MapMyWalk profile if anyone  wants to add me but I had a hard time figuring out how to link it for some reason.  That is what I used in the beginning and I am starting to use it again.  It’s actually gotten a lot better since I first started using it 3 years ago.  Now it integrates your personal music that you have downloaded into the workout routine if you want it to.

I just got back on this app recently even though I wasn’t actually doing anything at all.  I just added it back to my phone in hopes that it might motivate me I suppose! And it basically did.  But here is how.   There is a social aspect to this app now that I never used before.  People can add you as friends and it alerts you when they’ve done something.

So I now have friends on this app.  I don’t know them but we’re friends. And even though I was not doing anything at all, one of the people who added me as a friend gets out there and walks the dog about 3 or 4 times a day.

So there I am laying on the couch doing nothing and I suddenly am startled by this  DING from the phone.  And it says….

“Allen walked the dog 0.4 miles”

A few hours later…DING!…..

“Allen walked the dog 0.71 miles”

So here I am doing nothing but Allen’s dog is getting more of  a workout than me.

This continued on for several days.  I started getting annoyed with it actually. There I am doing nothing and there is Allen’s dog doing more than me.

It’s like Allen (whoever you are) is throwing it in my face! Because a few times a day…. DING! DING! DING!…my phone goes off

Allen walked his dog again….

While you were laying on the couch eating things you shouldn’t be and watching Lifetime Movies

DING! Allen walked the flipping dog again!!

While you continue to sit on the couch and grab another diet soda and channel surf

Allen’s dog just kicked your butt again in walking!

OK FINE ALLEN!! I get it!!!

That last part was said out loud to which my kids replied, “Who is Allen and what did he do?”

It became this running joke between us.

“Has Allen walked his dog yet?”

“What kind of dog does Allen have?”

“Do you think Allen’s dog is up yet?”

DING! DING! DING!  More notifications that Allen walked his dog!

I finally had enough of it.  Allen and his judgmental nonsense!! Always walking his dog these short distances throughout the day and shoving it in my face.  If Allen could walk his dog half of a mile 4 or 5 times a day then I could at least WALK MYSELF that far ONCE a day.  I will not let Allen’s dog beat me!  I will not be outwitted, outplayed and outlasted by Allen’s dog!

(I watch too much Survivor)

So I credit Map My Walk and Allen’s dog for getting me out of the house.  And every day for the past 5 days I’ve done it.  My goal is to finally go further than Allen’s dog.  And if I keep at it, I will!

Here are  some of my stats

I have done more than what is shown but sometimes I forget to turn on the Map My Walk App and track it

UNLIKE Allen and his dog who never forget to track it!

I don’t know if you can see it but I’m getting quicker at this half mile.  I’ve shaved off about 2 minutes and that’s because I’m jogging part of it.  Also I’m getting more motivated and not dragging quite as much.

So my challenge this week is to keep it up.  Keep getting out there and eventually do a full jog for that half a mile and then start adding more every day.

I hope your Monday is going well.   Do you have a 5 day streak challenge to work on?

HOORAH! Let’s do this!!!

Glad to have the app. info-now to figure it out.
If I just put on my walking stuff as soon as I get up it usually helps me get going-I have even heard some people say that they sleep in their workout clothes so there is no excuse!

You crack me up, so funny. I’m joining you for a 5 day streak. Day 1 under my belt today. I wasn’t going to go out because it was wet but I didn’t feel like going on the treadmill. Then I remembered this post from yesterday and thought “Okay Holly, as long as I know you are out there doing it I’m doing it too”. I waited until the sun was up today though. I have to say, not as much fun as leaving the house in the dark and coming back with the sun up 🙂 Hope you and Allen’s dog got your half mile in. See you tomorrow.

I was literally laughing out loud – people were walking past my office looking in to see what was going on. You have inspired me AGAIN and I am going to hop on the five day streak starting today.

Way to go Holly! Check out the ‘Pact’ app. It has really motivated me, and may do the same for you.
