Rules To Live By–Part two

Continued from my previous post here—Rules To Live By–Part One

Rule #5—-Learn How to Take A Hit

This is a hard one

But it’s going to happen

Life is going to knock you down

Some of the people you are closest to may be delivering

The hardest punches

They’ll come when you don’t expect them

They’ll even come when you’re already at your lowest

Life will kick you when you’re down

And then cram its toe right in your eye to rub it in

You’ll lose weight one day

And gain back that pound tomorrow

You’ll gain control one week

And lose it the next

In the words of Rocky Balboa

“The world ain’t all sunshine and rainbows

It’s a very mean and nasty place

And I don’t care how tough you are

It will beat you to your knees and keep you there permanently if you let it

You, me or nobody is going to hit as hard as life

But it ain’t about how hard you’re hit

It’s about how hard you can GET hit and keep moving forward

How much you can take and keep moving forward

That’s how winning is done!!”

Rule #6—-Stalls Happen

Wouldn’t it be nice if we all just cruised down the scale

Losing our 2 pounds per week

Every week

Never hitting a stall?

Sure that would be great

But it’s not going to happen

Your body will throw you for a loop

It will sometimes act as if it’s working against you

You may do everything right

Perfectly in fact

And still see no results on the scale

WHY??? You plead with the square box beneath your feet

So in retaliation, you eat pizza

And ice cream

And say “screw exercise!”

Because what’s the point anyway, right??

One of the most important things I’ve learned

Is to EXPECT stalls and plateaus

And then power through them

You can’t live your life by the numbers

Because the numbers won’t always go your way

I’ve gone a full two weeks never seeing the scale move

Even though I was doing everything right

But one day I would wake up

And 5 pounds might be seemingly gone overnight!

Stalls happen

Just wade through them like mud

And have faith in what will come if you don’t give up!

Rule #7—-You Can’t Out Train a Bad Diet

I’ve heard this phrase

And found it to be VERY true

The reality for me has been this

What I eat matters a lot more

Than how much I work out

I discovered this when I went through periods of time

Where I did not exercise at all

And as long as I controlled my food intake

I lost weight with no issues

A lot of people may think I have to work out a lot

To lose weight

But quite truthfully, it’s not the case

I worked out a lot more in the beginning of this journey

But as time went on I began to see

That I didn’t have to kill myself in the gym to lose weight

That in fact I could never work out again

And I’d keep losing

Now that doesn’t mean exercise is not beneficial

Of course it is!!

And it does burn calories

But when it takes 5 minutes to eat 800 calories

And hours to burn them off

It boils down to a simple formula

If you control what you eat

You’ll lose weight

But it will take much longer to try and burn off what you eat

Now many people choose to eat more intentionally

Being willing to spend hours in the gym

I’m not one of them

I work out because it’s good for me

It helps with flexibility, balance and strength

It makes my heart stronger

I work out for the health benefits

Not the weight loss benefits

And when I go through lulls in my exercise regimen

It rarely affects the scale

So long as I control my food

I never pay attention to how many calories I burn when I work out

Because I don’t work out for that reason anymore

I decided awhile back that I refuse to “work” for food

And to me–working out so that I can allow myself extra food

Is just not worth it to me

It makes exercise even more dreadful to me when I feel like I’m having to earn my food

Through a workout

Or sweat off something out of regret

So I don’t connect the two

I work out because it’s good for me

But I don’t do it to lose weight

Because I know that I can lose weight without it

It’s true what they say

You can’t out train a bad diet

So I don’t try

Love this! Just the encouragement I need to hear because I’ve been stalled for over a week. This gives me hope! Thank you

Very sensible rules. Exercise is great, but diet is more important for losing weight.

This is great stuff Holly. Before I can worry about eventual stalls, I need to figure out how to get this journey started. Well, I have started, but off to a slower than expected start due to my clinging of old habits. Thanks for sharing your experiences. Hope you and the family have a nice 4th.

I totally agree with #7! And number 6, but I think #7 is the one most people need to remember. Once again, great job on the post, Holly!
