Overwhelming Cravings

Have you ever been faced with an overwhelming urge to eat? A craving that is so intense you can barely stand it? At that moment, a fear may overtake you. A very real fear that you won’t be able to resist the food. Fear that you might even go crazy if you don’t eat that cupcake! This is a horribly uncomfortable feeling. You want nothing more than to stop this panic that is taking over and pushing you like a bully closer and closer to the food which calls your name.

What if I told you that God had the ability to keep you safe in the midst of that storm? That even if you let the flood gates open and stop holding them back….you will not drown b/c He will keep you afloat. This may be a completely different experience if you have never tried it before. What if the next time you encountered a craving, you decided to sit in it for awhile. Not live in fear of it but ride it out. Not trying to get it to go away or fighting it but just experiencing it, feeling it, and being SO uncomfortable but still walking through it while holding onto the hand of God.

In order for you to have confidence that He can get you through this very scary and trying time, you must believe and have faith that He cares for you, loves you, and wants to shield you from harm. Do you deep down believe that? I would encourage you to spend time studying the character traits of God.

How is He our Defender and Protector? How will you hold onto that belief in times of trouble if you have not deeply embedded that belief into your heart?

I want you to know this—Those fears/feelings/urges/cravings/thoughts are temporary. They will pass. They will not last forever. What makes them last so long is your fear of them. But if you let them come and just sit still with them trusting God to get you through it….they will pass. I PROMISE!

When you face an overwhelming crave or urge to eat/binge or face obsessive thoughts about food—stop and read this verse

Psalm 46:10 Be Still and know that I am God

Now are you willing to embrace that verse fully? To be still in the face of an overwhelming craving? Not trying to make it go away by reaching for food but instead walking through that feeling knowing God is in total control. Being still in that moment and knowing that while you may feel very uncomfortable, He will get you safely to the other side.

He is your Defender

2 Samuel 22:3-4
The Message (MSG)
God is bedrock under my feet,
the castle in which I live,
my rescuing knight.
My God—the high crag
where I run for dear life,
hiding behind the boulders,
safe in the granite hideout;
My mountaintop refuge,
he saves me from ruthless men.
I sing to God the Praise-Lofty,
and find myself safe and saved.

You are my hiding place; You shall preserve me from trouble; You shall surround me with songs of deliverance. ( Psalm 32:7)

How precious is Your loving kindness, O God! Therefore the children of men put their trust under the shadow of Your wings.( Psalm 36:7)

There are so many more verses about His Protection. I encourage you to look them up, copy them, recite them, study them and embrace them. Consider that as an essential part of the battle plan. As critical as planning your daily food intake or exercise!

Ask God to help you BELIEVE them because it is when you are faced with that overwhelming craving or urge to compulsively overeat/binge, that you will need to hold fast to that belief. It is when obsessive thoughts come your way that threaten to grip you in fear, that you must cling to the knowledge that even in the face of battle Your God will NOT leave you or forsake you.

Make no mistake, my sweet friends, this is WAR. You need not fear it, run from it or resist it. You already know who wins the battle and claims victory. All you need to do is grab hold to the One who has promised already to never leave your side. In doing this you may find that even though the waves come crashing over you, they will not drown you. Even though you may feel at times that you will be completely overtaken, you will NOT. How do I know this? I know this because I stopped letting the fear push me into the food. I chose to walk through the fire holding onto God and believing HIs promises would hold true. There are times when I still falter but only when I lose my focus. Only when I give more power to the cravings than to my Savior.

Do you believe that He can keep you safe? Try Him! He will never let you down!

I am new to trusting in God. I tend to revert to willpower when I am in the throes of craving food; consequently, I forget to rely on God. The thing about willpower is that I cannot count on it to work for me each time. My Higher Power (God) will be there each time as long as I stay connected and have faith. Thank you for reminding me of this; it is just what I needed to hear this morning.

Just want I really needed today. Past several weeks have been a roller coaster ride of emotions. But that is in the past and I need to get back in control but I fear doing it alone. Thank you, I should always remember that I am NOT alone.

I need to get back to reading my bible again.

Yep! Still have a few cravings. Powering though them and realizing that it’s the food addiction and not intuitive eating and visualizing how good waking up another day food sober gets me through

Hang in there!!! Karen p

We are told that after Jesus had gone without food for 40 days he was hungry. There existed in Jesus an intense physical longing for food. His body craved food. The craving was not sin, but merely the physiological response of his body to not eating for 40 days. Now, while Jesus is in this condition of hunger, the tempter comes to him and says, “If you are the Son of God, turn these stones into bread.” Satan is not suggesting that Jesus might not be the Son of God. He is saying, “Since you are God’s son, just like John the Baptist said and the voice from heaven declared, then use your divine power to satisfy your hunger.” Here’s where we confront our difficulty in relating to the temptation of Jesus. How is this a temptation and how is it like any temptation I encounter?
