Freebie Friday and Links I like

April 5, 2013 in Uncategorized

So it’s Friday and I thought I’d let you all know about a few free things I’m taking advantage of this week

1.Joyce Meyer Book

I’m all about looking for ways to encourage and uplift myself so I was pretty excited when I found out that Joyce Meyer is giving away her brand new book “Making Good Habits, Breaking Bad Ones” for any amount on her website.   Here is the preview for her book

I love Joyce Meyer and I listen to her podcast when I’m out walking.  I also watcher show online here.

I was kind of surprised they were offering her brand new book for ANY donation…even 1 dollar!  She often does give great deals on the website but not usually one that is hot off the press!! So if you like Joyce Meyer definitely get your copy.  I haven’t read it yet (because I just ordered mine yesterday) but I have a feeling this topic is going to be a good one for me. I’m always in the process of trying to break bad habits!

Here’s the link

2. Go Tandem Website

The second thing I signed up for is a website called Go Tandem.  Now I literally just signed up for it today so I can’t really tell you what I think just yet.  It sounded pretty cool though and it’s free so I figure…why not.  Basically it is a subscription service where they will periodically send you text messages and audio clips to your phone.  They’ll also have a real person call you once a week to encourage you.  Now THAT seems both interesting and scary to me.  hahahaha  I’m kind of weird about talking on the phone to people I don’t know.  I mean I have no issues telling every detail of my life through a blog to people on the internet but phone calls? Hmmm….

I’m going to try it through.  I already signed up for something similar to this through an app that sends me little reminders and positive quotes all day.  It’s actually an app  called Recovery Record for eating disorder recovery and you can find it at this link.   I can’t remember if I had to pay to download this app or not but I’ve come to really enjoy it.  It’s always texting me things. My kids of course think I’m quite popular because I’m always getting these texts. Little do they know, it’s just the app texting me to say “Chin up!! It will be ok!”  So I’m assuming the Go Tandem subscription will be similar.  If I can get enough apps and subscriptions to call me and text me, I might feel like I actually have a life!! (It’s a joke…kind of)

Here’s a clip of what Go Tandem is all about

I can’t recommend it since I only signed up today but let me know if you’ve ever used it before and what you think of it.

3. Sun Warrior Free Smoothie E-Book

Now onto protein powder!! One of my online friends alerted me to this deal.  Over at the Sun Warrior website, you can get a free e-book for smoothies.  Since I recently decided to start easing my way into clean eating, I had already researched several protein powders and this one had come up as being a great one to try.  So I downloaded the free e-book and I plan to head over to Sun Harvest or Whole Foods and see if I can grab this protein powder.  I did like the ebook a lot and it had links to a lot of people who also write on the issue of clean eating.  So that was an added bonus.

Here is the link for that

4.  Free Audio Downloads for Panic and Anxiety

As you all probably know, I have issues.  ‘Nuff said.  But for real…panic and anxiety is one of my biggest issues.  I used to have a method that controlled this REALLY well.  It was called “Peanut M and M’s”.  I used to carry them everywhere I went for those break-the-glass panic moments.  Unfortunately, I found myself with an even bigger problem which we all know was weighing over 400 pounds. Now I have to find other ways to control panic attacks.  I’ve been doing a lot of research lately in the field of cognitive therapy.  I’ve been going to see a cognitive therapist.  I majored in psychology so I have always believed that the way we think affects our moods.  I have learned a lot about panic and anxiety in the past 5 months because my panic/anxiety increased recently due to some stress in my life.  I found it rearing its ugly head again.  I’m going to start sharing with you all the things that help me work my way through panic.  Here is a resource I’ve used and enjoy.  I feel you take what works and leave the rest!!! These are free audio downloads.  There are different visualizations and my personal favorite is the one where she talks you through a panic attack.

All of the downloads are here—> Excel At Life Downloads

5.  A speaker I listened to who talks about anxiety from a Christian perspective and has a website with useful resources for free

‘Don’t worry Be Happy’ from Mind and Soul on Vimeo.

6. Kids Eat Free

Here is a website you can use to see where kids can eat free.  I’m not saying the food is going to be healthy.  I’m just saying the kids can eat free there on certain days.  I’ve got 4 kids.  If I can find another place that also will feed my 4 pets for free…I’ll be there too.  Let me know if you find one of THOSE restaurants!!

7.  Free Kindle Books

I’m obsessed with my kindle and finding free books.  These are sometimes free so you have to jump on them when they are.  Here are the ones I recently got for free:

Tongue Twisters for Kids

Caveman Farts: The Story of the First Stinky Fart    (Yes I have an English degree and no this is not great literature…but I also have an 8 year old son…what can I say?)

Eat Non Toxic: A Manual for Busy Parents

I just downloaded this book today and it was still free.  It looks good for my adventure into clean eating.  I still haven’t read it yet so I can’t really give you a solid review.  But hey…free is free. Here’s the description of the book

“We all want to keep our kids safe from toxins and chemicals in food and feeding gear. Every day there seems to be a new report about what to eat, what not to eat, what to buy, what to avoid. It’s overwhelming for many new and tired parents! Many parents don’t have the time to read scientific studies or lengthly articles. You just want to know what to do keep your kids safe and healthy.  That’s what you’ll find in the new eBook, Eat Non-Toxic: A manual for busy parents, written by author, teacher, and the founder of the blog, Non-Toxic Kids, Katy Farber. In this book, you’ll find clear, useable, helpful steps for how to protect your family and the earth from the toxins and chemicals from food and feeding gear.”

Chia Seeds

Dont’ ask me why chia seeds are good for you because I really don’t know.  I just know that people say they’re good for you so I decided to try and incorporate them into my life.  It seemed like an easy place to start with clean eating.  Here is an example of two new things I’m trying together….Chobani greek yogurt and Chia Seeds

In the past I have kept away from yogurt b/c it appeared to have lots of sugar in it and I was afraid that might set me off.  Also yogurt sometimes reminds me of ice cream.  And I don’t need help reminding myself of ice cream!! But I’m testing it carefully and we shall see!!

This was my breakfast this morning

Here are two free Amazon kindle books I downloaded on Chia Seeds.  Maybe they will help me figure out why they are so highly recommended!

The Power of Chia Seeds

The Chia Seed Weight Loss Diet

I hesitate to post the last one b/c I don’t like recommending “diets” per se especially when I’ve never even read the book.  But it is free and maybe it will help me figure out what chia seeds are all about!

One thing I will highly recommend with chia seeds…..DENTAL FLOSS…>I can already see that is going to be an issue with these little guys!

8.  Blogs I’m Reading

And Finally…It’s time I start giving some love to the blogs I read regularly

There is no way I could list all of them but I think I will start trying to give shout outs on Fridays to some of the people I get inspiration from

Here are a few:

Skinny on Staci        I’ve been reading Staci’s blog since I started out on this journey.  She really cracks me up and in fact I consider her a friend as we do a little chatting via email.  She’s funny and I’ll never forget when I put up a picture of me with my hand on my hip and she told me I was “getting sassy” now that I’d lost some weight hahahah  You might enjoy reading of her recent adventure with a skunk.  Poor Staci!!

Skinny Emmie     It’s her birthday! It’s her birthday!! And speaking of free stuff, she’s doing a giveaway this week.  You’ll never fail to be inspired by her.  She’s honest and I like that. Here she is on twitter

Free Julie    I’ve been reading Julie for a long time.  She talks openly about everything from weight loss to tummy tucks to dating.  Since I don’t date, I live vicariously through her.  For real–she’s like watching a really good tv show.  I get sucked in and then lose track of time.  She’s personally to blame for loads of laundry I didn’t get folded.  Thanks Julie!

Cornell Thomas and the Power of Positivity   Ok I found this guy on Twitter.  He’s very inspirational.  I’ve been following him for a few months.  I recommend following him on twitter too.  He has overcome a lot of adversity in life and he’s just an all around awesome guy.  Here’s his twitter link too

9.  Get two free Quest bars!!

These are the only kind of bars I eat because they have almost no sugar.  They’re low card, GMO free, gluten free and high in fiber/protein

Go to this link

That about does it!  I hope you all have a great weekend!

I leave you now with a picture of me and my son fitting in a BOOTH.  And I am actually in the MIDDLE.  Miracles happen every day around here!!

Thanks for the info.. I’ve been thinking about giving chia seeds a try as well.

Lynne April 5, 2013 at 2:32 pm

Thanks for sharing all your inspirations. I like Joyce Meyer too so I’ll check out that book. I love greek yogurt and chia seeds, but haven’t combined them. I like to just use plain yogurt and add fresh fruit – I think it’s less sugar than the stuff that comes already combined and Iike the consistency even better. Have a great day and weekend!
Love your booth picture!

Staci April 5, 2013 at 2:52 pm

The premise for Chia seeds is they suck the toxins right out of your intestinal system. Put a spoonful in a bit of water and you will see they turn into a gel. That gel works like water-soluble fibre to encapsulate and suck bad stuff out of our gut. A small warning–my Sister-in-lawl found the chia seed sludge didn’t move through her intestines–same with nuts. So she had to stop taking them. If nothing else you’ll be as regular as the mail. Enjoy.

I’m dealing with anxiety and panic attacks right now so I appreciate your helpful links. Right now I’m doing medication but I hope to be able to manage without meds. Nothing feels worse than a panic attack when you don’t have a support system in place.

Do you know about Pixel of Ink (dot com), Holly? It’s a free service on facebook and they have a web site that tells you about tons of free books available for your Kindle. I love the books I get there. They also have a second list for religious books. That site is InspiredReads dot com.

I have found hundreds of great books there.

Love you babe… but you’re starting clean eating so you’re buying protein powder? Huh? In what universe is protein powder a real food? Have a steak!

Do you subscribe to Every day they post on FB, their website, and (if you choose) send a an email with free or greatly reduced free Christian books. They aren’t posting as many as they used to, but last year I downloaded about 1000 free books! (A combination of fiction, non fiction, Bible study, etc.) (pixel of ink) also has free books. Their list is more mainstream. (It does include Christian books, but most of them are on the Inspired Reads list).

D April 7, 2013 at 11:29 pm

I had a bit of a love affair with chia seeds and yoghurt last year.
I discovered chobani last year visiting america and was so excited when they introduced it here. I’m doing a pre-op diet at the moment but they have just released heaps more flavours, can’t wait to be post-op to try some of them…i loved the raspberry! They have quite a bit of sugar in them but better than ice cream for a sweet treat.

Just wanted to tell you that you look great in that picture, my first thought, “she’s getting so skinny!”

Christine A. April 8, 2013 at 7:42 pm

Thanks for all the freebies. Been needing to read up on chia seeds myself.

May we all find little victories all day, every day. God’s encouragement to us.

Bless you Holly.
