Universal Studios, Islands of Adventure, Seussville

December 6, 2012 in Uncategorized

We conquered Disney

We conquered the Wizarding World of Harry Potter

And now we were off

To complete our tour

Of Universal Studios

The first time I saw ET

Was with Beth and Lee

They were teenagers

And I was the little sister

So how fitting

That we got to go on this ride together!

Charlotte was nervous about riding a roller coaster

But she decided to do it anyway

She told me she wanted to try it

To overcome her fears

When she walked off that roller coaster

I was amazed by the change in her

You could see it on her face

CONFIDENCE

She literally walked up nervous and scared

And walked off

A WARRIOR

We went about 5 steps

And we came upon some people

Climbing a wall

And they were shouting to the people walking by

Who wants to do this?

Who wants to climb up this wall?

Charlotte stopped

Pointed across the street at the people

And she said

“I WANT TO DO THAT”

And she did

It was kind of amazing

Because she walked up to the roller coaster scared

But she made a personal decision

TO DO IT ANYWAY

And something miraculous happened

Once she conquered that

She was ready to climb mountains!!

She literally walked a few steps

Saw some people climbing a wall

And said

I CAN DO THAT!

Our entire family was shocked

Because that is just NOT something that Charlotte

Would normally want to do

And yet that single experience of conquering her fears on the roller coaster

Filled her with the confidence to say to any mountain

MOVE!!

And it now would

My brother and I talked about how Charlotte’s transformation in confidence

Reminded us of our own experience

With 30 seconds of walking

How that 30 seconds can grow confidence in you

And before long

Just like Charlotte

You’re pointing at your mountain from across the street and saying

I’M CLIMBING THAT!

And then you do!!

Here they are at the “Despicable Me” ride

I fit in this ride with my son!!

What fun we had in Seuss-Ville

This is such a colorful area

It really brings the books to life!

We went to the gift shop

And found the cutest shirts

Thing 1, Thing 2, Thing 3, Thing 4

My kids were so excited

“We have to get these, mama!!”

At Disney, we bought ears for every one of us

And wore them all day

At the Wizarding World of Harry Potter

They got robes and scarves and hats and wands

So now it was time

For one last hurrah

And there were exactly FOUR “thing” shirts

Which we just had to buy

But then it happened

My kids noticed THE shirt

The one that could be for me

The one that said

“Mother of All Things”

And they exclaimed with excitement

“Mama this one is for YOU!!!! You have to get one too!”

That’s when it happened

That knot in the pit of my stomach returned

That knowledge that you will never ever be able to join in the fun

Because you can’t buy a shirt off the rack

Not ANY shirt

Not even a plus size shirt

Because you special order all your clothing from the internet

So this is out of the question

And it’s not a big deal

It’s not life ending

It’s just a cute idea

But it’s one that is not for YOU

It’s for other people

It’s for the ones who fit

But you….

Not you….not ever

But then Savannah found one shirt

An XXL

A size I would never have dreamed I might fit in

Except….I DID!!!

ME

Walking into a store

Seeing something on the rack

And buying it

Just like that

Participating in a fun idea with my children

Not being left out

Victory!!!

I can’t even explain to you what that meant to me

How fun it was for the children

It’s like this small thing

Compared to the roller coasters

And the wild rides

And the 3D effects

And parades

And yet somehow

It was the thing my kids MOST remember out of that day

That I

ME

The Mother of all the most precious things!!

FIT IN A SHIRT OFF THE RACK!

That I was able to buy something WITH them

ALL OF US TOGETHER

And this was the perfect way

To round out our trip

This miraculous trip

Full of magic

Full of milestones

Full of miracles

By walking through

The wisdom of Dr. Seuss

Awhile back, I wrote  a post

Titled “Oh the Places You’ll Fit”

Inspired by Dr. Seuss

Because I was more than amazed

That I could fit between two cars

Parked so close together

That one door could touch the other

And yet

I fit!!

And it was in that moment

I discovered

All the places I could fit

But in this trip

On the plane

To the beach house

To Disney

To Universal

To the Wizarding World of Harry Potter

To the Islands of Adventure

To Seussville

I discovered that now it is not JUST

The places I will fit

But the places

I can GO !!

And those I  can now go WITH

So you see

This battle is worth it

For me

And for you

For you are special (Matthew 10:29-31)

You are precious (Isaiah 43:4)

You are worth it (John 3:16)

So in the spirit of Dr. Seuss…

Fight the battle

And know

That it’s not all uphill

There are good days

And bad days

And sometimes you will

Trip or stumble and fall

Get turned all around

You may even find yourself

Hanging upside down

You thought you were going

On the super right path

Only to find out

That where you went

Ended up bad

So you’ll turn back around

And you’ll start once again

Waste no time on regrets

They won’t help you then

You don’t need to get sad

Or lose hope

Or give up

Because just when you think

That your number is up

That’s when you’ll find yourself

Really in luck

Your pants will fit better

Your knees will not hurt

You’ll suddenly realize

You’re even more alert

You can walk to the mailbox

You can tie your own shoes

You can fit in a chair

And the pounds you did lose!

So remember this story

Of victory

And hope

Because the story is YOURS

And that is no joke

You write the story

From this point on

The choice is now yours

So join me in the fun!!

Awesome!! I know exactly how you feel with the shirts! At work we regularly get free t-shirts to wear around the store, and the other day my boss tossed me a unisex size XL and said, “This one is for you.” My stomach did the same flip flops because I did NOT want to tell him that I was too fat for it. I tried it on anyways and it FIT!! I felt like crying I was so happy!

Perhaps some of Charlotte’s new found courage has come from watching her mother conquering so many fears and obstacles?

Is it just me who thinks you look about 20 years younger than that first picture of you sitting on the couch in July, 2011? Really beautiful…my heart rejoices for you and your family.

Top of the Christmas list you go, Molly!!! LOL…but seriously THANK YOU!! That is such a kind compliment!! I will say this..I sure do feel 20 years younger!! It is just unbelievable what weight loss will do for you. It is so much more than fitting into the next size. In my case…it does feel as if I’ve turned back the clock!

You don’t know me, but I follow you. I also share in your journey. I so related to the post about buying something off the rack a nd being able to participate. I remember the last time I went to the county fair and the ride operator told me I couldn’t ride with my son, that I would have to have a car to myself. Humiliating. I’m tetering at 240ish now. My goal? 175. My dream? 150. My desire? To be healthy and active with my family and kids and be able to serve the Lord without limitations I have placed on my body. Thank you for being so honest and daring to share your journey. Blessings~iadopted5

Ginger, I do know exactly how you must have felt when that ride operator told you that. It is heartbreaking. Your goals AND dreams both sound possible! I know you will achieve both. Your goal to serve the Lord without limitations is just amazing! What a beautiful prayer!! Thank you so much for sharing!!

Isn’t it fun to fit in those crazy tourist t-shirts? I LOVE IT! You are absolutely adorable in yours, and I love how the kids all got numbered “thing” shirts and you are the “Mother of All Things!” That is PERFECT!

I can finally wear my Cornhusker t-shirts and sweatshirts too–supporting my favorite college team, and even a Kansas City Chiefs or Royals shirt. It is such fun. I could never find any in my size before. Even on-line those fan shirts just don’t come in 5X! And…on my trip to New York City, I wanted one of those I “Heart” NY t-shirts. I found one in a Gift Shop on 6th Avenue, and even though I had to get a long-sleeved one to cover my awful batwing upper arms, the shirt fits great and I wear it all the time!

Last spring, I went to the John Deere store with hubby, he was picking up a part for the garden tractor. I spied a pink long-sleeved John Deere t-shirt. What fun to be able to buy clothes anywhere–even at the John Deere store. Like you–I wrote a blog about it! http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=4876149
