Hope in your future is power in your present

September 4, 2012 in Uncategorized

Believe it or not

My brother started out with 30 seconds of walking

That’s all he could do

He was over 400 Pounds with multiple health problems as a result

A doctor told him that he was going to die if he didn’t lose weight

But he had tried so many times before

For so many years

It was truly hopeless

Or was it?

He took that last chance

He had weight loss surgery

And he combined it with exercise

The only exercise he could handle

30 Seconds

I would never have thought it would be enough to make a difference

But when 30 seconds turns into 60

And then 60 turns into 90

90 turns into…

Here he is getting ready for the bike portion

And he’s close to the finish line!!

But before he crosses the finish line

Let’s not forget

That once upon a time

He could only do 30 seconds

And guess what?

That 30 seconds was every bit as hard

As this Triathlon was

Because when you push yourself as hard as you can

Whether it’s 30 seconds or a Triathlon

Either way

You’re working to your personal best

So be proud

If 30 seconds is all you can do

Then do it

Because next week

You’ll do 60

And then 90

And before long

You’ll go from this

To this

Never underestimate the power of a victory plan

That starts with something simple

10 seconds…20 seconds…30 seconds

And then builds a little bit more each day

Because when you accomplish your goals

It gives you hope

My brother likes to say

“Hope in your future is power in your present”

To me that means

That if I have hope for the the future

Then it will give me the power I need today

To do what I need to do

To walk another 30 seconds

To push myself a little further

If you have no hope for the future

Then you won’t even try

But when you know hope is out there

It will fuel you

It will give you strength

It will give you power in the present

To go for it

Because you will know that what you are doing counts

And it WILL make a difference

You will progress

You feel frustrated and tired and like nothing will ever change

But my brother proved to me that things WILL change

If you hold onto the hope

And let it fuel you in the present moment

To keep going when you want to quit

Because he gave me hope for my future

I now have power in my present

And so can you

We’ve been hopeless for far too long

It’s time to believe

Not in some idea that we have to workout 2 hours a day

And run 5 miles

From day one

To make any progress

But instead to have hope

That starting small

Starting with what we can manage

Even 30 seconds

Can bring you to the most profound change of your life

From over 400 Pounds

To your 2nd Triathlon

Hope in your future is power in your present

Your brother is truly an inspiration to all of us. My brother was never as heavy as me, but about 20 years ago he lost 75 lbs., and through true determination and hard work he has kept it off all these years. So he is an inspiration to me too. He bikes, with rheumatoid arthritis, it is the best exercise for his knees. He bikes a lot! He has proven to me that weight lost can STAY lost forever. At least that is OUR goal!!!

Wow, I’m CHEERING for this post! As a trainer for very overweight people, I tell them it’s OK if all they can do is a minute at a time. When I weighed 340 lbs, I let myself get started like that and, more importantly, I let myself feel good about it! I tell people not to pay attention to those DVD workouts they can’t keep up with or “advice” that they have to workout an hour or more a day. Just get started and don’t be concerned about what you’re not doing…yet. Get on your own path and you could be amazed where you end up!
