Unfinished Projects

July 13, 2012 in Uncategorized

I’m no longer a slave to cupcakes

I’m no longer cashing in my paycheck

And heading straight to the grocery store

To buy my drugs

I found my freedom

But I have to still work at it

It didn’t drop out of the sky

It’s not easy

It’s not effortless

I don’t just wake up in the morning

And wait for my life to automatically unfold

For the freedom from food to just envelop me

While I sit back in my recliner and bask in it

Oh I wish it was that easy

Because no one likes laying in the recliner more than me

Truth be told

I’m lazy

If I had the choice between cleaning my house

And watching the Lifetime Channel

Well…you know where I’d be

But what do you think would happen

If you didn’t pay your bills this month?

If you just didn’t pay the mortgage?

Or the power bill?

If you just wake up and think

“I have a house to live in and electricity. Β And I don’t have to do a darn thing to make it happen!”

I could think that is the case

Just because I don’t pay my mortgage every single day

Just because I don’t pay my power bill every single day

It might look like it’s all for free

But it’s not

Because on the 1st of the month, I have to pay up

And if I don’t–it’s all getting cut off

The same goes for a clean house

You put in a lot of effort cleaning it

And it’s clean

If you don’t clean the next day

It probably won’t make a big difference

But if you don’t clean for a month

If you let the clutter pile up

Before long, you’re going to end up on “Hoarders”

Because life gets cluttered

Life gets messy

The bills have to get paid

And if we don’t do it

Then one day the lights are going to turn out

The water will stop flowing

And the house will get repossessed

Or so filled with clutter and dirt that it will take a team of people to fix it

You have to pay the bills

You can’t just let it go

The same is true with weight loss

You have to pay up

At the treadmill or the walk around the block

Or by eating something other than Donuts

But one way or the other

You have to pay up

Every day

If you want a return on your investment

Sometimes we start out strong

But somewhere along the way, we just quit

We just stop paying up

Just like a home foreclosure

The same will be true of your body

The day will come

Where you’ll find an eviction notice on your chest

Your own body turning against you

Shutting down

From high blood pressure or chronic pain or diabetes

Because you stopped paying up

And just let it ride

Hoping nothing would happen

Not focusing

Not finishing what you start

Clutters up your life with unfinished projects

That half knitted square that might have been a scarf

That half painted castle on my daughter’s wall that I haven’t finished

That half written novel

The garage half cleaned out

My mother used to tell me

“They don’t pay me at work to only do half the job”

We have a lot of unfinished projects in life

But let us not be one

Don’t let the unfinished project in your life

Because maybe you won’t finish the painting

Or the book

But you should finish YOU

You are the biggest project you will undertake

And if you give up on knitting or writing or painting

That’s one thing

But when you give up on yourself

That’s tragic

Because you are a project too

And you don’t deserve to be tossed off in the corner with the half knitted scarf

You are not the project that should be left unfinished

Your life should not be an unfinished painting

God says you are His Masterpiece

There is no one like you

Ephesians 2:10

Β For we are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew, so we can do the good things he planned for us long ago.

And you are a masterpiece

Worth finishing

He started something great in you

And He intends to finish it (Phillipians 1:6)

But in order for that to happen

You have to get up

You have to pull yourself out from the collection of unfinished projects

And believe that you are a project worth finishing

Because you are!

When I finally realized that we will always be a work in progress I also knew that “goal weight” isn’t the end. We need to continue to invest in order to continue to enjoy the dividends.

I know we overuse the term “weight loss journey” around here but it’s true. There is no final destination. A goal weight is merely a new phase of maintenance. Given a new body, you still need to check in and keep it up. You buy a new car, it’s still going to need oil changes and tune ups. No one is perfect and we will always be works in progress and that’s OK. πŸ™‚

I LOVE this! That is exactly how I see myself…as a half finished project. I am really pushing myself to try and finish this project and I hope like Hell I can!

I love the analogies! I’m sure they will help me stay motivated. I really appreciate you sharing. I often get just the boost I need, or something relevent to ponder.
