The Power of Group Fitness

I’ve been alone for a long time

I’m not really alone

Because I have Jesus

And He says you are never alone

I have 4 children

And anyone who has kids knows You are REALLY never alone once you have children

Even in the bathroom they pick the locks!!

But there’s another type of “alone”

I can’t describe it

My husband is gone

My mother is gone

My grandmother is gone

And deep down inside…sometimes….I just feel ALONE

For the past year I’ve been outside walking alone

It was tough

Finding my way off the couch

And out to the road

Counting my mailboxes

One by one

Sometimes there were hecklers

But I kept going

Eventually it led to my Planet Fitness Routine

But I’ve finally reached GROUP FITNESS

My brother kept telling me

Once you get to ‘group fitness”

Everything will change

He kept telling me

That the enthusiasm and camaraderie you will get

Will flip the switch

Exercise will no longer be a chore

It will be FUN

EXHILIRATING

EXCITING

I didn’t believe him

ME?

Enjoying Exericse

WHATEVER

That’s what I thought

I exercise because I have to I exercise

To lose weight

It’s a necessary evil

But I don’t look forward to it

I dread it

And then I discovered Crossfit

I never thought THAT would be for me

Someone like ME Doing Crossfit??

I just finished my first week

The Coach is amazing

She texts me after every workout

“Good job!! You are doing awesome!!”

I missed a day

And she texted me

“We missed you! Everything ok?”

Planet Fitness never did that

I met Merrily there

She has been working out at Crossfit for  2 months

And now she’s lifting heavy weights and doing amazing things

When I missed a day

She posted on my Facebook wall

“It wasn’t the same without you!”

When I go there they take pictures

And post on my wall

“Way to go!!!”

Today our Workout of the Day

Included running 400 meters

3 times

In between that we were lifting weights

That last 400 meters

Was kind of rough

I wanted to quit

Then suddenly I could hear someone behind me

It was Merrily

She was DONE

FINISHED

She had already finished her runs

But there she was

Beside me

“What are you doing?”, I asked

“Aren’t you finished?”

Because I knew I was the last one

I’m always the last one

But she said

“I wanted to be here for YOU”

So she ran with me

We finished together

There she was

DONE

And yet she chose

Out of her own free will

To run an extra 400 meters

So she could encourage me

What makes someone do that?

What makes someone go an extra 400 meters when they are already done?

I’m learning that there is power in group fitness

There is power in Crossfit

Where people aren’t just there for themselves

They are there FOR YOU

When I walked out I felt stronger

More courageous

Later in the day Coach Diana texted me “Great job!!”

Things are changing for me

I’m no longer dreading exercise

I’m almost looking forward to it

That’s never happened to me before

And it’s exciting

There is power in group fitness

There is something to be said

For finding people who can encourage you along the way

I feel I am at the tip of the iceberg

There is more to come

What will this bring?

Only time will tell

So good to hear Holly! I love having a workout buddies (even when it’s my dogs). So glad you found new friends and most of all isn’t it so cool that you did what you did to make it to Crossfit! Rock ON!!! You know something…You’re becoming a sneaky little exercise lover! HA! I knew you would! 😉

I like how your group is so encouraging.
Merrily probably had someone do that
for her a few short months ago, & knows
how motivating some encouragement
can be.
You know what this means, right? Before
you know it, YOU will be the more
experienced one cheering on a newbie!!
And who knows, maybe eventually
mastering a one armed wall stand. Hee
Hee. 🙂

Lovely, lovely, LOVELY! Your stories are so beautiful and inspiring. I admire YOUR courage and strength, Holly. I’m so sorry you feel alone. Just remember…there’s a larger story going on…a much bigger one than what we can see with our eyes. And I believe God will restore to you the “years the locusts have eaten” (Joel 2:25).

They’re paying it forward! Someone was there for them and now they will be there for you!

I don’t exercise in a group (I used to and loved it but my gym doesn’t offer classes), but I do look forward to going to the gym and seeing the friendly people that work there and the people who have become my friends since being a member for 1 1/2 years. Misery loves company, no?!? LOL!

But you know what? You’re doing it. And, God willing, when you are no longer last….someone else will be. And you’ll remember the encouragement and extra laps that Merrily ran to help you out and you’ll be the one doing the encouraging for the next “last girl” who joins your group. Keep it up. You rock.

Holly, Crossfit sounds like it really agrees with you. Exercise, socialize and have fun. I hope to do Crossfit some day after I’ve lost some weight. The workouts seem really intense. Good for you.

I know!! I graduated from the PVC pipe to the bar!! That thing is so heavy! I think it weighs 45 lbs by itself but feels like 200 to me lol. I can’t even believe people put weights on the end of that thing too!!!
