The Shortcut

May 21, 2012 in Uncategorized

Today Charlotte and I went to the grocery store

We had a list

Because you need one

You can’t be ME and go to the grocery store without a list

Because if you don’t have a list then that means you’re “flexible”

That means you don’t have a concrete plan

And that means things like Oreos can end up in your cart

So we carry a list

And when we were done we took a “shortcut” to get to the check out counter

Funny how the shortcut was down the chip aisle

My…my….so nice to see you again

It’s been so long

Oh yes….I’ve been away you know

On a journey

A weight loss journey

So I don’t get by to see you guys that much anymore

This is what I said to the chips in the aisle

And they replied

Well since it’s been so long

One dollar off two bags of chips

AND one dollar off queso dip

You wouldn’t want to pass up a deal like that would you?

Aren’t you frugal?

Aren’t you a good steward of your finances?

Passing up a coupon would just be WRONG

Well let’s see….

Should I get the scoop chips or the round chips?

Or should I get the generic brand or the name brand?

What is happening?

Why am I even in this conversation?

I’m not buying chips!

I look over at Charlotte

Just standing there quietly by the cart

Because all of these conversations have been taking place in my head

While I was just staring at them

The chips

So she was staring at me

Probably wondering if I had gone into a trance

I begin walking again and say

“I think we need to get out of this aisle.  We don’t need chips”

She agrees

But then adds

“Ya know…..I was just thinking up a good strategy”

I kind of love how Charlotte throws out big words every now and then

“If we add a vegetable on TOP of the chip then it will probably be ok”

Ya think?

“I dont’ think so”

“Yeah you’re right. BUT what we could do is just PRETEND they’re vegetables”

Ya think?

NOPE. That’s not going to work either

I ask her “Is that all you got? I think we need a better strategy”

She tells me “Well I was thinking that maybe we could crumble up the chips into a pile of vegetables”

I’m still thinking that’s not going to work

This conversation continues all the way out to the car

I tell her “So far none of these strategies are working for me.  Do you have a better idea?”

She says a bit sullenly

“Yeah….How about we just don’t go down the chip aisle anymore”

I agree

I asked her “How did we even end up there in the first place?

Because quite frankly I don’t remember

She replies “It was supposed to be a shortcut”

“But shortcuts are supposed to make your life easier, Mom.  And that one made it harder”

“I think maybe we should stop taking shortcuts”

AH….the wisdom is more profound than she knows

I love that your kids are all in this with you. You seem to share a lot of your reality with them and they get to see what these positive choices you are making is doing for you. I bet that will make the choices for them later on easier.
You are such a great story teller! Such a joy to read!

Tell her they do have carrot chips for munching. 🙂 Hehe. Love the shortcut idea. I’m always telling my husband that we end up taking much longer to “get somewhere” when we follow one of his “shortcuts.” Same way with weight loss, I guess!

I think the chips really have been able to talk recently- because they have asked me to buy them and I DID. Which I never do- because I have no control over eating them. I actually brought 2 bags home last week. I think they must be controlled by the moon or something. Too much strange stuff has been going on with the moon lately- so I think it has caused the chips to become alive and actually able to speak and try and control your mind. Or atleast that is what I keep telling myself. LOL. Glad you guys were able to be strong and bypass them. That is awesome. Am soo proud of you and how your pounds lost keeps rising higher and higher. You rock!

Chips don’t really speak to me…now hawaiian bread with spinach dip or those darn frosted cookies…they call my name repeatedly. Love Charlotte’s strategies…they made me smile. 🙂

I sometimes make the mistake of going through the chip aisle myself, and have pretty much the same conversation with myself.

You know what helps? The fact that coupons are only really a great deal if you NEEDED the food in the first place. If not, you’re just spending more money. 🙂

I love the metaphor in this “shortcut.” There’s so many different meanings it could take on as it relates to taking shortcuts with weightloss! Every single time I tried to take a short cut in the past, it may have worked for a a brief moment, but I always ended right back where I started. What a wise child you have! AND kudos to you for NOT getting those chips! One day at a time!

I was at the store yesterday and of course my weakness is the baking aisle with all that icing in it. I needed nuts for my salads. Why must they be in the baking aisle?!?! I was literally looking straight ahead and holding my breath LOL. I refused to walk back that way and came back down a different aisle just to avoid the torture. I totally get it 🙂

When I go to Costco, I need a list or we end up with 10 things we didn’t need and usually they’re not good for us.

You have a smart daughter!

Sheila May 22, 2012 at 11:27 pm

What an awesome little lady you have there! And YAY for STOPPING the conversation with the chips. Remember when I said food doesn’t talk to me anymore? Well it USED to and I had to giggle because it used to sweet talk me all the time! Thank goodness I can’t hear what it’s saying anymore…

Carrie May 23, 2012 at 12:13 am

A vegetable on top of a chip!?! Girl, THAT is so totally MY logic!

I agree with the list, too. I have to do one. If I don’t, I leave having spent way more than I intended with crap I never intended.

That Charlotte is a smart girl. =)

I have personally felt that if I go with out a list I end up buying more than I actually need!
