My friend Stephanie

May 27, 2012 in Uncategorized

When I was in high school

Some of my best friends were athletes

Which was very ironic

Since I was NOT

One of these girls was Stephanie

She played softball and field hockey and basketball

Maybe more?

But she was beautiful and in shape and strong

Inside and Out

I admired her for that

We lost touch after high school

As many do

Then the internet was invented

We renewed our friendship

And since that time we’ve kept in touch on and off

With Facebook making that easier

When my mom died Stephanie wrote me a message

Even gave me her phone number

Because there was something we always had in common

We were both raised by single Moms

I don’t think we shared very much about that when we were growing up

But we knew that there was a bond there

A commonality

We both were living in homes with just two people

Me and my mom….Her and Her mom

And here we are 20 years later

Finding ourselves once again in the same boat

Because both our Moms died

Around the same time

Lately Stephanie has been processing things about that on her blog

And I’m finding it therapeutic

Because we didn’t have the same Mom

Or even the same back story

But one thing we have had

Grief, questions, pain

And she’s processing it

Not eating it or drinking it or fill in the blank self destructive habit-ing  it

And that’s something I admire

And there is something else

She’s a mom of three kids

And she works a full time job

And she runs marathons

Like this one

From the time I knew her in high school

Until today

She has always found a way to put her health at the top of the priority list

She has strategies for staying consistent and motivated

Which she talked a little about here

Her life hasn’t always been easy

And yet she’s found ways to overcome

Even winning AOL’s Chief of Everything Award

In 2008

Where she was interviewed about her keys to success

Which I hope you’ll check out  here

She was even featured in Runner’s World

As their Challenger of the Week

Where she was asked what advice she would give to a beginner

And she said

“Take it one step at a time: Start with a walk around the block, then gradually, each day, do a little more. You will be surprised where you will be in a short amount of time.”

And I know without a doubt

She is right!

So when I think about turning 40

And I look around at people to inspire me

Motivate me

Someone I can say “That’s who I want to be like”

I always think of Stephanie

And what I love about her

Is that even though she’s always been athletic

And her life has been a history of conquering mountains

She doesn’t look at someone like me

Who was never an athlete

Who ate all my problems

Who gained 300 pounds

And say “I can’t relate to you”

NO she does just the opposite of that

She leaves me videos

To encourage me

How can that be?

Someone who runs marathons being able to relate to someone like me?

Someone who just now made it to 12 minutes on the elliptical?

That has to be backwards

Except that maybe

We’re all on this path together

And some are ahead

And some are behind

But when we all stop for a minute

To cheer each other on

No matter if it’s a marathon

Or just that first step to the mailbox

That’s when we realize

What it’s really all about

It’s not always about how far you went

Sometimes it’s just the fact

That you did it

That you didn’t quit

And every day that happens

Is a victory

Because one step

Can turn into a marathon

And Stephanie gets that

And can’t we all use more people like that in our life?

I think we all need friends like that, but not all of us have that. You are blessed.

Hi Holly!
Just wanted to stop by and say thank you for dropping by my blog earlier today. It was so nice to meet you.

Beautifully written post! And Stephanie sounds like a AWESOME lady!

I think you answered your own question….

“Except that maybe

We’re all on this path together.”

Amen! We may each have different challenges and goals in life, but we can all relate to being on the path. Therefore, I think it’s so important that we support and cheer each other on!

Nice blog you have here!

You GO, girl!

That is awesome. See, as a person who has been overweight her entire life, I have this preconceived notion that someone who hasn’t had this struggle can’t possibly understand. That sounds very judgmental of me, but that is how I have felt. They never seemed to understand that just stop eating or just do more aren’t as simple as they seem to think it is. Thanks for reminding me that is such a fallacious way of thinking. We are all in it together, not matter what our degree of hardship is.

Isn’t it wonderful to have a friend like that?! Someone who gets us and encourages us. Stephanie sounds very cool!
I got back in touch with a girlfriend from high school many years later after my father passed away. She heard about it and sent me a letter with her contact info and we’ve been very close again ever since … over 12 years now! So I know how nice that is to reconnect with someone and have it turn out wonderful.
I’m sorry for the loss of your mom. Mine has been gone about 16 years now. *sigh*

Thanks for the comments you left at my blog. Nice to meet you. 🙂
