Be Inspired Sunday: Robert from Youtube

Be Inspired Sunday: That day of the week where I share what is inspiring me

My best friend sent me the link to this video.  You have to watch it.

Are you wondering why this inspires me?

Let’s see.  This man weighs between 600-700 pounds, right? And he’s scared.  He is afraid he is not going to be around to watch his niece and nephew grow up.  He is afraid he will never have a life.  A family.  He is begging someone to help him.

And he’s turning on a video camera at 600-700 pounds and talking to complete strangers.

And making himself totally vulnerable.  Opening himself up to criticism.  To jeers.  To those inevitable individuals who love to kick someone when they’re down.

That takes courage.

He is asking for help. Do you know what that means? That means he still believes help is out there.  He still believes he has a chance.

He wants his video to go viral because he believes that if that happens then someone out there who CAN help him will see it.  And this is his way of making that happen.  Not sitting back and just waiting around for someone else to make it happen.  No HE is making it happen.

And  the video did go viral.  Why? Because this man named Robert picked up a video camera and turned it on. He took a risk.

You see, Robert makes things happen.

And he’s not afraid of bullies.

He says this:

“Everyone that is going to make fun of me. I really don’t care.  “

Do you realize how big of a statement that is? I mean Robert didn’t just say that to one bully he met on a school playground.  He said that to ALL the bullies.  Collectively.

Robert has GUTS.

And he still believes that there is hope for him yet.

As humans we need hope.  We need it to survive.  When your hope runs out you’re through.  It’s like the last flicker of the candle being extinguished.

The light is gone.

But not this guy.  He used that last flicker of the flame to power up a video camera and make a plea. Even though he knew it might not work.  And many would criticize.

That makes him a  RISK TAKER

He turned a camera on himself at his lowest point and put it on youtube.

Oh have you met youtube?  Here’s the conversation.

Youtube: Hi, I’m Youtube.

Anyone: Oh hi how are you today?

Youtube: Wow you SUCK.  You’re ridiculous.  What a loser

That’s what youtube is like for a lot of people who upload videos there.

Have you ever read the comments people leave sometimes on Youtube?  It’s as if some people view youtube as a big pile of ants.  And it’s their job to shine the magnifying glass on them until they fry.  Or to stomp on them one by one.

They live to hit ‘dislike’ and then leave a comment about how you are nothing more than a giant $@@^%$#####

Because that makes them feel good.

Like the man who yelled at me out the window to go in the house because “you’re too fat to be outside”.

And when you’re vulnerable you really don’t need someone doing that, right?

And yet this man, Robert,  was willing to take the hit.

Because somewhere inside of him hope lives.

So let’s recap.

Robert makes things happen.
He is a risk taker.
He stands up to bullies.
He has guts.
And hope lives within him

I don’t make videos for a reason.  I’m not that courageous.  Oh give me a pen and I’m likely to spill out my heart.

But a video?  Not so much.

And yet here he is..a courageous, hope-filled, risk taking, fear stomping man.  Willing to lay it all on the line.

So today I am inspired by a man I don’t know.  One who looks to be in a hopeless state.  But who in fact is one of the most courageous people I’ve ever seen .

Because he could have chosen to give up.  To be intimidated by the bullies.  To let that flicker of hope die out.

Instead he turned that camera on.  And he said “I DON’T CARE” if people make fun of me.  If they mock me.

Beause this is MY chance.

And that’s why I believe that he will succeed.  For the same reason ALL of us can..

When we hold onto HOPE

When we say  “I DON’T CARE” to the bullies, people and voices in our own head that taunt us.

When we wake up and claim what is ours.  We say this is OUR time.  This is OUR chance..

Dr.Phil has contacted him and I’m sure others will follow.

But none of it would have happened with out his courage.  His guts.  His risk taking. And his willingness to hang onto hope.

And that inspires me.

EDIT UPDATE:  I know many of you have mentioned that youtube has been a positive experience for you so I wanted to add that I agree. Youtube can be a very positive experience much of the time.  It’s really similar to the blogworld.  Or even the real world.  You’ll get a lot of support and encouragement.  But sometimes you’ll get negativity and criticism.   And then there are the “trolls” who just love to leave their venom wherever they can.  When I was writing about his courage, I was thinking about the “trolls” for lack of a better word.  But I hope I didn’t come across as being a basher of youtube.  Because I’m really not.  That would make me a basher of the world.  Because youtube is really representative of the world in many ways.  To take a line from an old tv show I loved…you take the good, you take the bad, you take them both and there you have…the facts of life!

Just wanted you all to know I see the big picture. Just felt in my heart that Robert knew when he posted that he was going to get some flack.  And he posted anyway.  And that takes serious guts. Which I believe is often what it takes to survive.  I did email him and I’m sure he’s been flooded with them but I say why not? Can you ever get enough encouragement? If they set up a donation fund for him to get weight loss surgery or some other intervention that could help him then I’m donating my tax return money.

Have a great Sunday!!

When I saw it I was hoping someone that could help him would. I agree with everything you said except for the negativity on YouTube. If that is your experience, I am sorry. Trust me, I am no fan of Youtube since they took my adsense account away for no reason. I prefer That said, for all the videos I did post on YT (over 60) I did not encounter anymore negativity than in the Blog-world. Let's hope Robert gets the help he needs.

YouTube really IS a scary place!!! Someone posted a video of my family singing without me knowing, and I was terrified to look at the likes/dislikes and comments. Then I was kinda sad that no one has commented at all. Haha Oh well, better than rudeness! 🙂 This poor young man. I can't wait to see him when he makes his "after" appearance!

Hope 🙂 I love it, it keeps me going and I do believe each and everyone of us in whatever situation we are in. Robert is courageous and I wish him the very best, I hope that right now he is getting the help he so desperately wants and needs. Ty, for posting this.

God Bless him. People in front of their computers and say things that they would never say to someone's face. It's horrendous. I pray he gets the help he needs and we see another video from him, through his weight-loss journey.

Hi, just found your blog while cruising around the internet this morning.

I watched this video as another blogger had posted it…. wow. I hope he finds the help he needs from someone who really cares.

I saw this video yesterday, and it had me in tears. Here I am making up excuses over and over as to why I don't want to go to the gym or do any exercise – and there's someone like Robert who wants nothing more than to go out and do something…anything…that will get him moving in the right direction.

I truly hope he can get the help he needs. He definitely has courage – and for that alone, I am behind him 150%.

My dad actually sent me that video in an e-mail for me to watch, and then urged me to make my own. He knows that I am trying to find away, and funds for WLS, and thinks Youtube may be a good source, and way to do that. (I have tried other ways, that seem to lead to dead ends). Robert is a brave man, and I am actually really moved at how many video replies I have seen that's encouraging and uplifting. The comments are cruel though. He truly has opened himself up and I HOPE he finds the help he needs! I know what it feels like to feel trapped in my own body, being held captive, and against my will. Screaming from the inside wanting out, but not being to get out. I'm actually thinking about making a video response to him.

My dad sent me this video via e-mail today. My heart breaks for him, but mostly because I know how he feels, feel like a prisoner in my own body, to feel trapped and held back from the one thing I can't escape! Myself. And feel hopeless as though I can't do it on my own, knowing I need help but not having the means to get that help that's needed. I have actually been shocked though at how many video replies have been uplifting, and encouraging. He put himself out there, and opened himself up for the entire world, and people have stepped up and supported him! Although I have read some bad comments from people. I am actually thinking about doing a video reply tomorrow! Why not? lol.

Thank you for spreading Robert's hope. He is a very strong person to able to post that video. I would have never done that! I hope that someone will help him. He definately deserves it!
